Default Who's done the Avon walk?

My BFF is a survivor, diagnosed the week she turned 31. She went through a partial mast, chemo (and everyting that went with it). In March she will turn 40!!! The Avon walk is coming to Houston in April, I called her today to see if she wanted to come and I would buy her ticket as her B-day gift. She is checking with her DH and kids schedules and will get back with me.

Ours is on a Saturday and Sunday. Those of you who have done this, how many miles is it? Is this something I could do with Lilia? I mean, I don't think I can do it without her I just want to make sure it will be ok to have her with us. Though the only stroller I have is the Chicco and I'm not sure how that would work since I'm certainly not bringing the Sit n Stand.

Anyway..... What was it like? Please share

I know Lori has done it, 'cause I donated to it! She hasn't posted here much though. Maybe she's lurking. She's Kurt and Nathan's mommy.

Well that's weird! I just went to check her username and I don't see her registered. Hmmmmmm... Did she unregister?

That is a pretty long one. I want to say that the 40 mile number is sticking out in my head.

You might check the rules for the walk, too. I know some walks that are longer than the usual 5K prohibit children under a certain age from participating in any way, including a carrier or a stroller. I think it is mostly an insurance thing. We dealt with this in arranging a charity walk I am helping with in April - the ability to bring kids in strollers was huge for our target audience so we had to scale back from a longer race to just a 5K.

Here's your link:
Avon Walk for Breast Cancer: Houston

This is from the Houston FAQs
What is the minimum age requirement? Can my kids walk with me?
The minimum age for participation in the Avon Walk is 16. Insurance costs prohibit us from welcoming anyone under that age, even if they are accompanied by their parents. There are, however, some volunteer opportunities for teenagers; you can find out about these through your local event office.

ETA: That's so wonderful about your BFF! The site has a link with info on what it's like to walk

Wow! That really sucks! I think it's so sad than an event like this would prohibit nursing Mamas since breastfeeding decreases your chances of getting breast cancer. Aparently they don't care about that and aren't looking for support of a huge part of the female community. So sad.

I think it sucks, too. It really makes sense ONLY from a liability perspective.

Yep, it's all about CYA, damn this litigious society we live in

I called and talked to the girl in Houston. She was friendly but not very understanding. I told her I wanted to speak with someone that had more pull and Megan Lynch with the Chicogo walk got on the phone. Honestly, she was great and very understanding. She did tell me that as we got closer I could talk with the logistics coordinator in Houston to get the route and Ken could meet up with me so I could nurse Lilia. She said generally they don't give the route but they would do this for me. I appreciate this but am not sure I am ok with being away from her the majority of the day, 2 days in a row.
Honestly, I think it's discrimination and I told her that. She told me she's been doing this for three years and this has never come up. I explained to her that my first reaction was 'screw them' but then felt I had to talk with someone. However, most women would have just said 'screw them' and not participated at all.
