Default I hope I wasn't like this

I'm teaching an online sport law class for a local college. I have 22 masters students enrolled in the class. They are a bunch of slackers. They have an assignment due every week and without fail, I get at least one person a week emailing me saying they forgot to turn in their assignment and asking for an extension. My policy is to not give extensions after the fact, so they probably all think I'm the biggest bee-yatch. It's so frustrating though when students who should no better don't.

That is aggravating. I would never have expected an extension after the fact, so I wouldn't have thought that's unfair. I'm surprised knowing your policy that they still ask! Maybe you should reiterate the policy and remind them that you don't make exceptions. I can definitely see how you'd be annoyed.

I don't accept late work either, but they still try. I had a guy today try to turn in an assignment that was due 2 weeks ago! Not gonna work buddy.

My SIL teaches at a University ( mostly seniors) and states very clearly in her class info all of her rules. No changing grades, no late assignments etc. She is astounded at the number of email requests for all kinds of things. The generations of "kids" are getting more and more ballsy about requests. Set down your rules and stick to them.

I think the only extensions I ever asked for (and received) in university was when I broke my wrist. It was my left (and I"m left handed) and everything took me FOREVER to do, one handed typing with my right hand was supremely frustrating and you think I have typos NOW!) and writing notes was next to impossible.
Aside from that instance I would have been way too afraid to ask for extensions!!!

Funny, isn't it? If they are working, I doubt they'd ask their employer or client for an extension on work that was due.

I would not care one bit about what they thought of me. You'd lose all respect if you laid out rules and then caved. Same as you would with your kids. You set an expectation, then you must hold to it.

The attitude today is "I am more special than anyone else", and "rules are made to be broken for me", and "It can't hurt to ask".

That is totally ridiculous (of them, not you)- you are serving them better by demanding punctuality and helping them learn a lesson they should have learned long before now.
