Default Catholic Etiquette Question

I am reading at my uncle's funeral and it is during a mass in a Catholic church. I am not Catholic anymore so I am not sure if I am supposed to do anything when I step onto the altar. As I remember a Catholic would kneel and do the sign of the cross, right? What is appropriate for a non-Catholic?

At my SIL's wedding we non-catholics were told to bow our heads toward the altar.

ETA: Sorry! I'm very sorry about your uncle.

Jen, so sorry about your uncle. If you're approaching your reading spot from the front or crossing over the middle of the church in front of the altar you'd pause and bow. But if you came up from the side I don't think you'd have to.

I'm sorry about your uncle. I agree that the head bow would be appropriate. When I did a reading at my grandfather's funeral, the priest gave us all an overview of what we should do which helped put me at ease a bit.
