Default Camcorder to Laptop

Are you able to download your camcorder videos to your computer? I don't have a Mac (I hear they're really easy.) Here's what I want for Christmas. I want the capability to video tape the kids with our miniDVD Sony and download to the laptop and edit. Is that so much to ask? I'm thinking of calling some tech support folks that "do it all!" Is this too much to ask? My kids do the cutest things and I think about the $500 recorder in the drawer collecting dust. DH pushes play for much too long and I want to edit all the crap and show some to our family.
Any ideas?
TIA

I know it's possible, we had the Sony Hadicam. I just have no idea how to do it. DH does it and I've never bothered learning how to do it. He's on another business trip, and I'll try to remember to ask him when he gets back.

DH does all our video stuff, but we have a Sony camcorder and I know that we had to buy an ADV because there are some compatability issues with Sonys. It was expensive (I think around $300) but DH said it made it soooo much easier. I know "capturing" the video on the laptop was the hardest part for him.

Definately call tech support or check out some of the techie websites.
