Pirate party! I had THE BEST pirate party for Luke's 5th birthday. Kids are still talking about it
I made his invites. They were super easy (I swear). I just got parchment paper and printed the following
Aye…ye be invited fer some birthday spirits at
Captain Luke’s Buccaneer Bash
Chart yer course fer (address)
in (city) on August 13th, 2005
We be shoving off at 5:00 pm
fer some swashbuckling fun, grub & kiddie spirits
Don’t ferget yer water gear, ye will be getting wet!
Wave yer flag if ye be attendin or have yer mum send a message
by yer phone to (phone#).
Sees ye there (or you’ll have to walk the plank – if you dare!!)
I printed them out and then took a lighter and burned the edges so they looked like an old treasure map.
I ordered pirate bandannas, swords & eye patches from OTC for the kids. Even the girls wore them! On the tables I had table top tiki torches. I bought a bag of clean sand at Home Depot and covered the bottom of the tiki torches with sand. I laid some bead necklaces, fake rings, gold coins & colorful starfish in them, all from OTC.
My mom had an old treasure chest that I used for the presents. I put it on the ground and put a bit of sand around it with all of the jewels and stuff. We served normal food. I had a fishnet with a few starfish in it behind the food table. On the table, I had a really ornate gold candleabra with red candles that I had burned and let the wax drip all down it. I had more sand & jewels around it. I bought a Disney
CD that had the "A Pirate's Life For Me" on it and had that song playing in a continuous loop.
My mom & dad's neighbor had a small old boat that he had put an axle on and some wheels. He used it to haul around his grandkids behind the golf cart. So we got that, painted it black, hung pirate flags all around it. I had
DH weld up a big rod that could hold a "sail". I got white fabric and made a pirate sail. We gathered all the kids up in that thing and my dad hauled them around behind his golf cart looking for "treasure" which was the pinata. My dad is such a ham, he had them all singing the pirate's life song the whole time. The video is hilarious.
Instead of gift bags, I gave each family a little glass bowl. Each kid got a live gold fish. I sent them home with a little ziploc of food too. It was so cheap (about $1.50 a family) and the kids loved it!
I loved giving that party. I wish I could do it every year!
