Default Birthday party help

For the past 3 months, RS has wanted a Pirate party. Now, he has changed his mind. Of course, because I was going to send out the invites tomorrow. He now wants a mermaid party. DH is freaking out. He refuses to have The Little Mermaid. RS always says that he is going to catch a mermaid when he goes fishing. It isn't really Ariel that he likes, but she is the only mermaid around.

I am renting one of those blow-up jumpy things. I was thinking about making it a fish/water/mermaid theme. What do you think? What can I do? Maybe a surf theme? Auuuggghh!! I had the pirate party all planned out in my mind. Now, I have to be creative, not my strong suit.

Any suggestions??!!

TIA

Stick to the pirate party, throw in a mermaid here and there to please RS. It definitely relates if you ask me!

I agree, stick with Pirates and throw in a couple of token mermaids.
I't s not like it's a cowboy party with mermaids... .that'd be odd. But Pirates and mermaids? Yar, that sounds like fun!

Go with the Pirates. Chances are he'll change his mind and want a pirate party again next week.

Pirate party! I had THE BEST pirate party for Luke's 5th birthday. Kids are still talking about it

I made his invites. They were super easy (I swear). I just got parchment paper and printed the following

Ahoy there, matey!

Aye…ye be invited fer some birthday spirits at
Captain Luke’s Buccaneer Bash
Chart yer course fer (address)
in (city) on August 13th, 2005
We be shoving off at 5:00 pm
fer some swashbuckling fun, grub & kiddie spirits
Don’t ferget yer water gear, ye will be getting wet!
Wave yer flag if ye be attendin or have yer mum send a message
by yer phone to (phone#).
Sees ye there (or you’ll have to walk the plank – if you dare!!)

I printed them out and then took a lighter and burned the edges so they looked like an old treasure map.

I ordered pirate bandannas, swords & eye patches from OTC for the kids. Even the girls wore them! On the tables I had table top tiki torches. I bought a bag of clean sand at Home Depot and covered the bottom of the tiki torches with sand. I laid some bead necklaces, fake rings, gold coins & colorful starfish in them, all from OTC.

My mom had an old treasure chest that I used for the presents. I put it on the ground and put a bit of sand around it with all of the jewels and stuff. We served normal food. I had a fishnet with a few starfish in it behind the food table. On the table, I had a really ornate gold candleabra with red candles that I had burned and let the wax drip all down it. I had more sand & jewels around it. I bought a Disney CD that had the "A Pirate's Life For Me" on it and had that song playing in a continuous loop.

My mom & dad's neighbor had a small old boat that he had put an axle on and some wheels. He used it to haul around his grandkids behind the golf cart. So we got that, painted it black, hung pirate flags all around it. I had DH weld up a big rod that could hold a "sail". I got white fabric and made a pirate sail. We gathered all the kids up in that thing and my dad hauled them around behind his golf cart looking for "treasure" which was the pinata. My dad is such a ham, he had them all singing the pirate's life song the whole time. The video is hilarious.

Instead of gift bags, I gave each family a little glass bowl. Each kid got a live gold fish. I sent them home with a little ziploc of food too. It was so cheap (about $1.50 a family) and the kids loved it!

I loved giving that party. I wish I could do it every year!

I agree, stick with the pirate theme. OTC has some cool stuff, depending on how far you want to go. You can get these
DECORATIVE FISH NET and hang a few mermaids in them. That would be an easy way to incorporate it.

OMG Christy, are you for hire?? What a great party.
Bubbs is fighting me on this. Tomorrow night we are going to through OTC website, after I narrow down a few "cool" things and let him go from there. He was telling me this afternoon how his daddy is going to paint the great room (big ears on a little child. He overheard our conversation about painting the great room.) like Bikini Bottom for his fish and mermaid party. Oye.

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. I may be back for more.
