I can't see anything that you did wrong. Probably just some pansy-@ss fish that wasn't strong enough to swim against the little current from the filter.
Okay, so we are all set up for fish #2. Why, I don't know. I cleaned out the tank of all the water from the last fish. I changed the filter. I used water from our reverse osmosis filter - so that should take out the chlorine right? (I used the filtered water on the last tank and in his "vase" also). I've had the filter running for almost 24 hours. And I will put the fish in it's bag for an hour before putting him in the water.
Other than actually testing the water, is there anything I'm missing???

I really think it's the luck of the draw. I hope you got a strong, healthy one this time. We had a beta for a really long time. Then waited a little bit and then each of the younger kids got one (which meant an additional tank and stuff ). One of the two died within the first week. The other one is going strong. No rhyme or reason. And we really put very.little.effort into keeping it alive.
