Default Potentilla in pots?

Another question for you seasoned gardeners... can I successfully plant a potentilla in a container/pot??

I had a really crowded bed out front... I've moved a huge spirea, but there are 2 potentilla there-a white and yellow. Anyway, the yellow is fairly big but the white is quite small... I was thinking about moving it to a large container and just having the yellow one remain in the ground, if I wouldn't kill the white one by potting it.

Thoughts? I can't really find anything definitive...
