Default Beginner

Hi,my name is Ce and I am a beginner at gardeningI am so excited that the landlady has given me total free reign on planting at our new home!We have a great space of land.I am really really interested in growing some herbs. What is realistic for this time of year?I guess I have to hold off on veggies for a while right?I know I can ask my mom about alot of this stuff too (she grew up on a farm)but I want to talk about it nowI know I need to start off with baby steps so I don't get overwhelmed! So,what should I plant?

Hi Ce, welcome to gardening! I have to admit, I go on trial and error. I also don't know what works well for your zone as you are lots warmer than here. I hope you enjoy your new found talent!

Ce, I don't have much of a garden in my house yet. But I love gardening.
I have herbs year round. I have them in pots and when it gets cold they come inside. If you have a sunny window you can porbably have lots of herbs year round. The only thing I have in the ground it's s huge rosemary.
I'm not sure how the weather is there so I'm not sure if you can have teh herbs out year round. Keep in mind that most herbs like lots of light.

If you like simple flowers - anyone can grow Cosmos or Sunflowers. Neither one needs good soil or very much care.

My advice: Hit the nearest gardening supply store to the house. Get to know a worker and start asking questions. They will know when/where and HOW to plant the right stuff for your space, sun, and soil content. AND when they are having sales.

Rosemary grows like crazy in NC get yourself a bush and you will love it, watch out mine has gotten huge. I've planted basil and mint but in the springtime. Winter flowers here are usually mums and pansies. You can also plant lots of bulbs soon/october? tulips, daffodils etc, for a beautiful spring show. have fun!

BTW, you will probably get a major work out NC soil is the hardest, thickest, clay-iest soil I've ever seen. If your grounds haven't been gardened regularly you'll need DH or someone to come and dig it up with a digger (don't know the name of it) to get it loose.
