I would wait. With my first my water broke naturally but no contractions. With my second I was in labour and they broke my water because they had to insert an internal fetal monitor. I was handling the contractions really well until my water broke then it was out of control.

Did you have a super fast 1st labor? Are you far from the hospital?

I see no reason to break your water. I did it both ways. With kid 1 they broke my water at 9-10 cm because I was almost there. After they broke my water, my 10 cm shrunk to 7. I was in labor after for HOURS. They suggested breaking my water with kid 2 at about 7 cm. I declined. I was in labor for hours more, but it was a lot different. Laboring with the water broken is so much harder on both you and the baby. My doula said afterward that not breaking the water was smart because the baby still had to turn around - hard to do when the water is gone. She suspects that's what happened during my first labor, too.

Really, unless there is a compelling reason, I'd wait. I walked around 3 cm for days the first time around. I was over 5 cm before labor even started. Also, I delivered on my due date the first time and 10 days late the second. You just never know what that baby has planned!

My thoughts exactly! Really, is having a baby hanging between your legs on the way to the hospital such a bad thing? Seems like it would beat a long and painful labor!

Ok, I just spoke to my OB and my only concern so far is HIM making it to the hospital. We live 15 minutes drive from it and therefore that's not a concern but he lives all the way across town and he has business elsewhere tomorrow that's also all the way across town and he told me it's happened before that he didn't make it on time from that location. So that is my only concern right now...

The first time I delivered within 5 hours after being admitted to the hospital but they did break my waters at some point and I was also induced chemically to control the contractions. But that was a different scenario, it happened 5 days before my EDD and it was because my amniotic fluid had become less and the baby seemed in distress.
In this scenario the amniotic fluid is fine and the baby is fine. Only I look very ripe to the OB...

I would really hate not to have him there...
But I already told him Dimi is taking the day off tomorrow and we will wait it out and he said fine with him. But he will insist on breaking my waters by Monday because if anything occurs past that day it will be inexcusable...
He said his suggestion derives from pure medical point of view of wanting the best possible control for the labor conditions but since I want to have things proceed naturally he will respect it.

Ok, so now I took my decision...why am I stressing?

Good for you for sticking to your guns! My suggestion was to wait until you had signs of active labor and then hotfoot it to the hospital. You know wait but not too long (). Not that I'd know anyone who waited too long...

And why is your doc so hot to induce on Monday?

I'm sorry, but what he is saying makes no sense. "Best possible control of the contractions..." What does that MEAN? If you are going naturally, what does he expect to be able to do? And how would breaking your water give him any more control than waiting for labor to start on its own?

You obviously like this dr. since you want him to be there, but the idea that he wants to induce you just so he doesn't get called to rush to the hospital sounds a little crazy to me. What if you had gone into labor a week ago? He would have had to rush from across town then. What's the difference?

I think you are making the right choice for now. Take it one day at a time. You are almost there.

You are stressing because you are a mom. It does sound like you made the right decision for you and the baby, which is the most important thing.

Oh, no, he didn't mean control of the contractions, he said control of the situation. All doctors are control freaks...so knowing that I can be at the hospital and he can be at the hospital in time for everything to get started under controlled conditions, makes him more comfortable.
Really, I understand what he means. He basically wants to make sure he'll be there. When he told me that it could happen otherwise I began to worry and I asked what then and he said someone else on call would deliver me, but in the end he said that I shouldn't worry and that everything will be ok...
