| Runner's Knee | | After a little reading this morning and a bit of knee pain the past few days, I'm pretty sure this is what's going on. I've been running again for the past few weeks, but my last two runs have left me feeling serious pain when bending my knee (squatting, stairs, getting up and down, etc. are all killing me!). Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't really want to go to the dr. if they're just going to tell me RICE and ibuprofen. I have more runs scheduled this week plus a few hikes. Should I get a knee brace? Should I give in and go to the dr.? Just when I'm making great progress with exercise again...grr! |

| Re: Runner's Knee | | I've had it before and it was just a matter of resting, icing and strengthening my thighs that took care of it. Read this. The standing leg lifts are great.
No need for the Dr. right now, IMO. |

| Re: Runner's Knee | | I would head to the doc. DH just underwent reconstruction on both knees due to the pain he has experienced from running over the past 20 yrs. The XRays showed some serious bone chipping on both knee caps and the bone was rubbing against the chips....IF you plan to keep up the running, get a professional opinion so as to not cause more damage. It could be a simple sprain, but it could be more serious. |

| Re: Runner's Knee | | Have you thought about new running shoes? I have an old knee injury and arthritis in my right knee and I have had issues with runner's knee. However, since I got my new awesome running shoes I was fitted for at a running shoe store I haven't had any issues. Something to think about. The shoes you wear can affect your gate which can impact your ankles, knees, hips, back etc. |

Did he have regular X-rays or an MRI? I'm curious if something like this shows up on an MRI? |

I just bought my shoes recently, so I'm hoping I don't have to buy new ones too soon! I tend to over-pronate, so I have shoes that seemed to work for stability control, but I probably should go to the run shop to see if my shoes are causing the problem.
It's waking me up when my knee bends during the night- not good! Thanks for all of the tips, ladies. I knew there were quite a few runners here who would have some pointers. |

| Re: Runner's Knee | | If it's waking you at night, I'd have it checked out. When my ankle was hurting I went for a free injury check at my health club. They have PTs on site. They told me it didn't need a Dr. visit, but to RICE it and not run for at least 2 weeks. But, it only hurt after I ran more than a mile and it took a while for the PT to recreate the pain. Something that hurts everytime you move is something that should be checked.
You need your knees! |

Christina,
I would try the whole RICE thing. See how that goes. If it doesn't help then I would get it looked at.
I feel your pain (literally). Knee pain sucks. Hope you feel better soon. |
