Anyone have ideas how to cope with the mother who puts out food that is not good for people and takes personal offense when it isn't eaten? We are headed to my moms this weekend (for 10 days) and she expects everyone to eat much more than is healthy and the food isn't terribly healthy to begin with. I want to eat some healthy food and not gain 5 pounds on my vacation. Any suggestions?
Is it possible to meal plan with her? So you can plan what you want to eat during the time you are there? Bring some recipes with you? Personally, I won't change what I eat or how much I eat for anyone. No matter what. I'm not about to make their problem my problem. But that's me.
I am currently battling with my mom over this same issue. I will let you know when I figure something out. For now, the only thing that works is for me to strong-arm her into letting me cook.
I suppose BYO Snacks would just piss her off! Other than a firm, "No thank you." I"m not sure what to tell you. I'm just not hungry. As for the kids, I'd either BYO or ask for something more healthy - not sure how!
The only way I can see to keep the peace is to offer to cook at least half the time. Can you go shopping with her? Maybe tell her the snacks she's picking up for the kids makes them hard to handle???
Hmmm...hard one. I think I would have a heart-to-heart..Something to the effect of "We are trying to stick to fruits/veggies as snacks this summer. You understand how how it is with kids..." See how it goes.
