Default Organizing the school year

Last year, Bubbs had one assignment a week. It was given on Monday and due on Friday. 90% of the time it was done before Thursday. (I hate rushing)
I have a feeling that this year will be more involved in 1st grade. I don't want to be rushing around at 8pm fighting with him to get it done. I also HATED that my mom made me do my homework the minute I walked in the door. I want to give him some downtime, but I need to keep him on track. 2 days a week, he has an outside activity from 5pm - 6pm. Those days, he'll have a heavier snack after school and then we'll have dinner, realistically, closer to 7pm.
I am trying to figure out how to best organize the week. Should I give him some downtime after school, but make sure homework is done before dinner? On the activity days, should I give him the downtime after school, or go right into homework?

How have you made it work in your house?

I grew up with homework always being the first thing done. Maybe 15 minutes to unwind, eat a snack, etc. upon getting home, but then hitting the books before playing. It made sure we got it done and had the rest of the night to relax.

When I was younger (like Bubb's age), I had to do my homework while at school with my mom (she was a teacher). But I could get a coke and have a snack first. When I got into JH and HS I distinctly remember watching Jeopardy everyday before starting my homework. Maybe when he gets home let him have a snack and watch one tv show and then turn the tv off and get in to homework mode? I know I want a little downtime after school before getting back to work here at home, so I can imagine kids do too.

Wow - in Kinder Max had homework every night Mon. through Thurs. Usually just one sheet until he tested into the gifted program and then it was a couple of things. Those were assigned each night and due the next day.

This year in 1st he gets a list on Mon. of what he has to do through out the week and its all due on Friday. Its usually 4 phonics assignments, 2 or 3 math and a book to read. So far he has done most of it on Mon. and Tues. and is done for the week because he enjoys it and just wants to do it.

Usually he does it after dinner but this week since there is no tv he wants to do it while I make dinner so is done much earlier. Then we practice his spelling words once each night and read.

At first I didnt like that he was given it all at once but now that soccer practice has started I think its nice because we dont have to do anything on Wed. nights since we are home later.

We get ours once a week too, but it won't start until next week - YAY!
Last year, I had Maribelle do hers while I made dinner. She would sit at the island so I was right there to discuss it with her and make sure she was on track. It worked out great because I broke the week up so she did a bit each night and I was multi-tasking by cooking dinner at the same time
