Default My cake turned out poorly

We're celebrating a friend's birthday tonight, and I volunteered to make a cake. Well, I made my cake (two round 9" pans), and the middle rose a ton, but the sides didn't. So, I used sprinkles and plan to say that I meant the cakes to look like nonpareil candies, because had I chopped off all the uneven parts, the entire cake would've been less than 2" tall.

What did I do wrong?

ETA: It tastes just fine. It just looks deformed.

I'm not sure. Don't worry about it. I'd be thrilled it someone made me a cake!

Were your eggs fresh? I think that has alot to do with it.

Next time, flip the top cake upside down and fill the big gap in with frosting..not that I have ever had to do that

I think so ... I mean, I just bought them last weekend. They aren't past their expiration date ...

I ended up mixing it for longer than instructed because it looked too lumpy after 2 minutes. Could that have something to do with it?

Were you using a mixer or mixing it by hand?

I've had cakes do this and the only thing I've come up with is I overgreased the sides of the pan. Is that a possibility?

Actually, that could be it. I bake my cakes from scratch, and so when they stick to the pan and I have to pull it out in pieces, I get upset. I grease those pans like I've got a never-ending supply of Pam (for baking).

What do you use to grease the pans? I always just use Pam, because it's just SO easy.

I use Pam and then lightly flour the pan. It sometimes works. I'd love to hear if others have ideas.
