| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | Alden is addicted to the written word, just like his mama. We have been reading to him since day one...literally...considering I was teaching kindergarten when I was pregnant he was exposed from the start. That said, back to the question.
Storytime at our house is whenever he wants to read, which is all day if he had his way. The first thing we do in the morning is read a book. I always pick a book the night before to read in the morning before we get out of bed. I stand it up on the night stand so he can see it first thing. (Remember, he still cosleeps) After breakfast he picks out another stack of books to read and I will literally read until he is ready to move on, usually 10-13 books later. He has a phenomenal attention span for reading. When I shower each morning he is usually in his room reading books to himself or his stuffed toys.
We always read several books before nap and bedtime also. Throughout the day he is constantly have me read to him or reading books to me. We also do felt board and puppet stories at least once a day. We keep a tote bag of books in the car that he reads while we are out and about. We attend storytime every other week at the library and visit the library weekly.
A tip for mom's if you have a reluctant listener...try reading stories when your child is having a snack. It is a great way to hold their attention span and provide a calming experience.
Our current favorites include:
Trashy Town
Dig!
Digger Man
Chicka Chicak Boom Boom!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Very Clumsy Click Beetle
Dream Snow
The Gingerbread Man
What's in Fox's Sack?
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Polar Bear, Polar Bear....
Panda Bear, Panda Bear....
(There is a new one in this series that I just ordered..Baby Bear, Baby Bear)
Three Billy Goats Gruff
Any of the Curious George Books
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and the "sequels"
Llama Llama Red Pajama
Town Mouse, Country Mouse
Good Morning Little Polar Bear
The Bubble Factory
****-a-moo-moo
The Mixed Up Rooster
Fox Tail Soup
That's the very short list that I had on the top of my head. He loves fairy tales and aesops fables right now also.

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | I hated Velvateen Rabbit it was so sad it just drove me nuts.
We do story time at naps and bedtime and sometimes in between. Some days she is more into stories than others, some days she doesn't want to read at all. We play it by ear, I dont' force her to anything, but we almost always read a story at least at bed time.
We have this really dumb book that is Christian Nursery Rhymes and it drives me nuts b/c they a)scew up the nursery rhymes and b) they don't do it even very well. But Reagan loves it, her late greatgrandmother bought it for DH's 3rd Birthday and so what can I do.
She loves Dr. Suess Books. Foot book and Mr. Brown Can Moo were early favorites. Then Green Eggs and Ham and Oh the Places You Will Go.
We have a load of golden books and even a big book of old Golden book stories that are put together. She likes the Barenstien Bear's books,a nd they are rather long. She likes this one potty book that is No More Diapers for Ducky. And she has this Wee People Book Get Ready Eddie. And she quotes that one. She loves the Pajama Time and But Not the Hippopotamous (or however you spell it). And Brown Bear Brown Bear. We have Chicka Chicka 123.
Okay on the Chicka Chicka books is the Chicka Chicka 123 the same as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom??? am I totally retarded here?? |

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | My kids love books and we were reading to them from about 2 months on. We usually read at naptime and bedtime, and often in between. They love to look at books on their own too. They love the Sandra Boynton books - we literally have all but one I think, the shorter Dr. Seuss books (The Foot Book, Marvin K Mooney, Mr. Brown can Moo, There's a Wocket in my Pocket, The Nose Book, etc), Berenstein Bears (Inside, Outside, Upside Down), the Maisy books, some of the bigger picture books like My First Color Book, My First Body Book, First 100 Animals, etc. We have some longer story books too, but they don't hold their attention long enough at this point. We either paraphrase those books, or just skip them for right now. We don't want to discourage their love of books. They so enjoy them right now, and we only want to encourage that. Slowly they're listening longer to books, so we know they'll be there in the not too distant future.
I love that they want to read/look at books a lot!
This is great to get a good list for future reference! |

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | Since everyone here loves books so much, I thought I'd post that I go to this site everyday. It's one of those click everyday for free sites, and this one gives books to low income kids (it's the one that Noggin promotes). I just can't imagine a child not having books, especially seeing how much joy they bring my kids. And I truly believe that books can change a child's life. I thought some of you may want to go there daily as well. http://www.theliteracysite.com/click...faces?siteId=6 |

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | I'm so jealous of all your great little "readers". I'm lucky to get Michael to sit down maybe 1-2 times a week for maybe a book or two. He just doesn't want to sit still for it. He does like it when I make up my own stories for him, but we can do that anywhere on the go. I so wish I could get him to stop for just a bit. |

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | Reading was a struggle for us, too. Not that we didn't try, it just wasn't something that Asher warmed up to easily. But now that he has started, he wants to read all the time. Most of the favorites have already been mentioned. Though, he has just started getting into scratch-and-sniff books like Little Bunny Follows His Nose, etc. He likes books with a little activity in them, so if anyone has any suggestions on that front, let me know.
We just tried a new book last night called Just in Case. Oh, it was sooo silly and funny. I even had fun reading it to him. He just giggled and giggled. I can check the author if anyone is looking and can't find it, but I totally reccomend it. |

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | We do books at any time of the day when there's a lull and every night at bedtime. Right now they are all three at different levels so it's a juggling act.
C gets three board books, her favorites right now are:
Moo Baa La La La
Goodnight Gorilla
Tumble Bumble
Anything with pictures of actual babies - like the Big Book of Beautiful Babies
F gets two short books or one long book (we make the distinction). His favorites right now are:
The Berenstain Bears series of books
Any Thomas stories
Click Clack Moo
Giggle Giggle Quack
Diary of a Worm
I could go on but my fingers are getting tired.
B is now reading on her own. She loves all the chapter Fairy books she can get her hands on. Fairie Realm, The Disney Princess Fairy collection, The Fairy Chronicles, the Rainbow Fairies. And on and on. She just read Half Magic and loved it. She's read Charlotte's Web too. She's a little intimidated by the Little House series and the Judy Blume/Beverly Cleary stuff. Probably about a year from now. She also loves the Magic Treehouse collection, but we've read them all so far.
My kids (and DH and I) LOVE to read. |

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | A lot of the great kids books stay "in" forever. My kids loved Berenstain bears books, especially "Bears in the Night," which is basically a list of prepositional phrases, and "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish." Also every one of Judith Viorst's books for kids, especially "I'll Fix Anthony." Funny thing is, Alexander (of the "no good, very bad, horrible day") now does financial commercials on tv, and Anthony has been a practicing attorney for quite a while. Judith herself is now over 70, and I have always loved her books, both humorous poetry and serious life passages. |

| Re: Favorite Children's books and story time... | | Mason's first favorites were the Sandra Boynton books. When he began talking, he loved very simple board books with objects he could point to and name.
His all-time favorite book is probably Go Dog, Go.
He loves to read Richard Scary books--I love them because there is a lot for him to look at by himself, and I don't always have to read them.
Our favorites this summer were the Frances books and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
Right now he is very much into sharks and loves to read books about them.
I'm looking forward to reading chapter books with him, perhaps next year when he is 5. |
