They are kind of like beans, but tiny, and since they're so small you don't have to soak them first, so they're quick. I really like them - they have a distinct earthy taste, and lots of fiber! I used to make them all the time, and am trying to revisit some of my old standbys.
Pretty much the same I use them in my spaghetti sauce (instead of ground beef) and it gives the sauce a very similar look and texture. My dad didn't even realize it wasn't meat sauce!
To be fair, when they are in things they are so tiny you don't really notice the texture. How can you not like beans? I freaking love beans!! So much for being food twins :P

Kim, that's funny you say that about the texture - I used to HATE the texture of beans, but I liked lentils, and then slowly ended up liking different kinds of beans - I think I ate lentils first, then refried, then black beans, and then other beans. So, give them a try! You never know.
