Smiley Turns 25

From the Digital Emotion Department
The Smiley - :-) - turns 25 today. It was first used on a bulletin board in 1982 by Scott Fahlman. (well before the days of the world wide web).

Quoting the Article:
"Language experts say the smiley face and other emotional icons, known as emoticons, have given people a concise way in e-mail and other electronic messages of expressing sentiments that otherwise would be difficult to detect."

Yep - that's right. Somebody went to school to become an expert and got paid to make that statement.
