Getting Started
One of the first things to consider is your family history when deciding on a name. Some families have traditions that can slim down the choices and make things a little bit easier. The traditions can be things like naming the first boy after the paternal grandfather or applying a name from somewhere in the family tree a a middle name.Whatever you choose, make the decision together with your partner, and nobody else. Input from friends and family is definitely helpful, but make it a point when discussing names with family or friends that a decision has not been made until you are absolutely sure. They may order personalized gifts based on an assumption, or become very attached to a name that you discussed.
Too much input and discussion can be a bad thing. You certainly don't want friends or relatives getting the sense that they have some sort of veto power, and a casual comment regarding a name may take away the joy from a name that you are beginning to grow attached to.
Things to Consider
- Girlfriends and Boyfriends - you probably want to avoid names associated with old girlfriends or boyfriends. For some people this may be VERY hard. At least stay away from names of girlfriends or boyfriends that were special in any way.
- Last Name Compatibility - Think of the name in the context of your last name. You probably don't want something that rhymes, to create a pun (such as Candy Barr) or something that creates an acronym (Faith Amber Taylor = FAT).
- Popularity - Checking name popularity lists may sway your decision one way or the other. If you want something unique, you may find that it is not nearly as unique as you might think. If popularity isn't a concern, you may find something you like on the list.
- Nicknames - Always think about nicknames. Not just what you will refer to your child as, but what other people might use as well. Also think about it in the context of your child being teased.

Once You've Decided
When you have decided on a name, tell people right away. Tell them BEFORE you tell them the name. Avoid that uncomfortable situation where your friend tells you just how much they dislike the name just before you let them know that you have made a decision. Definitely get the word out to your family. Having a name is exciting news that everybody will want to share.Don't Forget a Backup Plan
Just because you saw the ultrasound and the technicians consistently said "boy" or "girl" from early on in your pregnancy doesn't mean that everything is set in stone. You wouldn't be the first couple to be surprised at the last minute.Name Your Child Interaction
