Homesourcing - Jobs for SAHMs

What kind of Home-sourced Jobs are Out There

There are two categories of jobs that are important to separate when thinking about home-sourced employment:
  • Work At Your Own Pace - jobs that are goal based and give you flexibility to handle your daily galavanting needs. Pay can be hourly or accomplishment based.
  • Regular Hours - Jobs that require you to be working a regular schedule, the same as if you were working at the office
The largest growth sector for home-sourcing right now is call center work - which is expected to triple in the next three years.

Caveats and Concerns

The largest concern for a SAHM to consider when looking into a home-sourced job opportunity is your capability to do it. Speaking from my own personal experience, working from home isn't always easy. Being in the house means that you are available to handle anything that may pop up during the day. Having dedicated office space in the house can help to alleviate the problem.

Flip that around and you have the fact that your family is always inches away, and it will be hard to just let them be.

Also, one of the benefits that employment provides is adult social interaction that isn't always available to Moms. Sure, you are picking up a paycheck that you didn't have before, but you are also adding stress to your life, and working from home provides little in terms of ways to alleviate that stress.

Benefits

Pay rates are generally lower, at least now, for home-sourced employees. You do, however, receive a hidden payment. You don't have to pay for gas to commute.

You also don't have to spend the time commuting.

You don't have to augment your wardrobe for the new job, or get your hair done, or even wash out that milk stain. Working from home means that you can look like Frankenstein's monster and nobody would be the wiser.

How to get a Job

Looking for a home-sourced job isn't any different than finding a regular job. You can search the big job boards for opportunities, but also look around for any job boards that might actually be specific to your niche. Don't forget networking - finding out about jobs through friends means that the employer already has a recommendation before you even interview.
