Just because summer is wrapping up doesn't mean that we are out of the woods. Keep your kids safe with these five tips.
- It's not just the pool. Even if you don't have a pool, babies and toddlers can drown in an
inch of water. Prevent hazards by keeping the bathroom door closed, have
a toilet seat lock, never leave a child unattended even by another child
in a tub for even a minute. Kids can tip over in bath seats and they are
for bathing only. Don't leave wading pools in your yard. Even empty,
it can collect rain or sprinkler water and a toddler can drown in just an
inch of water. Store out of site and upside down.
- Good swimmers are at equal risk with bad ones. Swim lessons will not decrease the risk of drowning. Always be vigilant when it comes to pool safety
- Never leave the pool unattended. Even the best swimmers should never be left unattended. Accidents can always
happen and a person should never swim alone.
- Floaties are for fun. Swimmies (arm floaties, rings and rafts) are not life saving devises. They
often give parents a false sense of security and a child should never be
left unattended even while using them. Children who can't swim should
wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation devise
but you still need to watch them.
- It only takes a second. Kids can slip and drown very quickly and very silently. Don't be distracted
by the telephone, magazine, books or conversation. Never let your eyes and mind
leave a child who is in the water. If your child seems to be fatigued, pull her
out.
