- Use a fan with your air conditioning to spread cool air around the room
- If you use central air, don’t place lamps or televisions near the
thermostat because they generate heat
- Because large appliances give off heat and use lots of electricity, only
use on a full load and try to microwave instead of using the oven to
keep the kitchen cool
- Install white shades, blinds, and drapes to reflect light away from the
house
- Make sure to caulk up and weather strip windows and doorways to keep the
cool air in and the hot air out
- If your air conditioning is more than ten years old…get a new one.
It will be twice as efficient and make sure it has the Energy Star label.
- Plant fast growing trees on the south and west sides of your house.
- Unplug unused appliances.
- Replace light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs.
- Turn off or reset the timer of your outdoor lighting.
- If you can afford another alternative, replace those old major appliances
with new Energy Star ones;
- Or even better, go with solar paneling.
